A habitat for the endangered Sable antelope
Shimba Hills National Reserve comprises one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa and is home to a great diversity of endangered species; flora and fauna. It has a very high population density of elephants.
Shimba Hills is a habitat for the endangered sable antelope. Other common wildlife that can be spotted here include the buffalo, waterbuck, giraffe, bushbuck, zebra and hippos. Several primate species can also be spotted and this include the yellow baboon, vervet monkey, colobus monkey and the sykes monkey.
The reserve is well known for its excellent sighting of birds. Some of the bird species include the red-necked-Spur fowl, Ostrich Eagle, African Hawk Falcon, Cuckoo; Guinea-fowl, Kenya Crested; Honey guide, Croaking Cisticola and Zanzibar Red Bishop.
Shimba Hills is perfectly suited for a day trip if you are staying in the coastal area; Diani or Mombasa. It is best explored using 4×4 safari vehicles. Visitors can also opt for a spectacular guided walking safaris where you’ll explore the forests flora and fauna, beautiful waterfalls. There are also excellent hiking trails and scenic picnic sites.
