Famous for the “Man-Eating” Lions of Tsavo
Tsavo is made up of 2 national parks: Tsavo West & Tsavo East. This is the largest national park in the country having been split into two due to the railway that goes from Mombasa to Kenya’s interior.
Tsavo is legendary for the “man-eating lions”. It is also famous for its large herds of elephants and captivating landscapes. Being one of the least populated parks in Kenya makes it the perfect destination for a relaxing and memorable wildlife experience.
Tsavo East is larger and is generally flat, with dry plains across which the Galana River flows. Other features include the Lugard Falls and Yatta Plateau.
Tsavo West is more mountainous and wetter with its swamps, the hippo filled Mzima Springs and Lake Jipe. It has a savannah ecosystem that is made up of open grasslands, acacia woodlands, scrublands, riverine vegetation and rocky ridges that includes the Poacher’s Lookout where visitors can catch a glimpse of the wildlife in the plains below.
Wildlife that can be seen in this park include the dust-red elephants, black rhino, Cape buffalo, giraffe, leopard and the lion. Smaller animals can also be spotted, including the hartebeest, bush baby, waterbucks, gerenuk and the lesser kudu.
